Competitions in physics and technology

Project description

The activities described here relate to a lesser extent to didactic research, but mainly to my passion for almost 25 years i) for promoting young people in the natural sciences, ii) for challenging theoretical and experimental tasks in physics and iii) for various competition formats (tasks, projects, shows). This includes:

  • Participation in competitions such as the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and the German selection procedure for the International Physics Olympiad [since 1996 and at various times as head of delegation of the German team at the IPhOs, head of the German selection procedure, state representative], European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO) [head of delegation of the German team since 2017], Federal Environment Competition (BUW) [jury member since 2004 and jury chair of secondary school I since 2007].
  • Invention and realisation of internal school competitions: inventor tournaments (start: 2005, focus on technology) and the current competitions (and shows) MINT-Fights (since 2014).
  • Involvement in the World Federation of Physics Competitions (WFPhC) [including as Treasurer and Vice President in the period 2002-2016] and leading the German delegation to the World Year of Physics kick-off event in Paris.
  • Research projects linked to the competitions included expert research funded by the DFG and the retrospective survey of former participants in the Natural Science Olympiads supported by the BMBF.
